In my classroom, we have only introduced suffixes through Fundations...and we have only introduced suffix -s so far this year! So I was a bit hesitant to deviate from the norm, and introduce this Root Study Program. However, after introducing the first lesson to my kiddos this week, I love it! I realize what an amazing, and natural concept it is to introduce root words (base words if you are speaking "Fundations-speak") and prefix/suffixes. Knowing common prefixes and suffixes takes you to a whole new level of understanding! My, how your vocabulary can grow!

The first day we brainstormed and discussed base words, prefixes, and suffixes, as well as their importance. We also had to discuss how the word "a" as in "a cat" is different, and a separate word, than a- as a suffix.

Getting ready with our first set of materials! Here are our Nike Sets of beginning prefixes and suffixes!

After teaching the prefix "a-" and discussing what the base word "typical" meant, we completed our first graphic organizer!  The program has students choose a word, but I planned to modify so I could have my students choose from a list of teacher-generated words. However, I could not brainstorm ANY prefix a- words, except for the provided "atypical", along with "asexual", which, for obvious reasons could not be a choice for our graphic organizers. For our first word, I had the students all choose "atypical", which was perfect, because we required lots of discussion for what this word meant (mainly because the base word was unfamiliar to us!).  I think for future prefixes and suffixes, I will also just choose the same word for everyone so we can discuss it as a group, and we can all generate different sentences and pictures for the same word.

Success! Look at that great monster! Read those terrific sentences! It took us nearly 3 class periods to complete this project, however, it was worth it. I knew my kiddos would require extra-time and modifications. All in a day of special education
